The Alte Feste, one of Namibia's most iconic historical landmarks, is set to undergo a major transformation with renovations having officially commenced. This project, a symbol of Namibia's journey toward healing and reconciliation, will repurpose the Alte Feste repurposed into an Arts, Crafts, and Heritage Centre of Excellence. It received a significant boost in its journey through a contribution of N$650,000.00 from RMB Namibia, earmarked for Phase 1 of the renovations.

With this major renovation, the Alte Feste will honour Namibia's complex history while creating a space for cultural celebration, artistic expression, and economic development. The project’s first phase, funded by RMB Namibia, will lay the groundwork for transforming this historic building into a centre for remembrance, education, and empowerment.

Speaking at the commencement of the renovations, Philip Chapman, the CEO of RMB Namibia, said,  "The Alte Feste is more than just a historic landmark; it's a symbol of our community's resilience, culture, and rich heritage. Built in 1890, this structure represents our nation's journey, struggles, and triumphs." 

Shareen Thude, General Manager of the Namibia Craft Centre, emphasised the importance of this project for the community. "The Alte Feste's transformation marks the beginning of a new chapter for both Windhoek and Namibia. This is not just about restoring a building; it's about creating a space that empowers local artisans, especially women, while honouring our shared history. This initiative represents both healing and opportunity."

RMB Namibia's involvement underscores its commitment to preserving Namibia's heritage while fostering opportunities for local economic development through culture and creativity. The contribution of N$650,000.00 from the FirstRand Foundation will support the first phase of renovations, which includes essential structural improvements and preparations for the museum and cultural centre. 

According to Chapman, "As the renovations begin, we are filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. The Alte Feste's transformation will breathe new life into this historic building and create new opportunities for Windhoek and its people. This space will become a vibrant hub of culture, creativity, and empowerment, providing a platform for local artisans and showcasing Namibia’s rich heritage. It will stand as a symbol of our resilience, uniting us in the pursuit of a brighter, more inclusive future."

The new Alte Feste will serve as a centre for remembrance, cultural expression, and economic empowerment, becoming a lasting symbol of resilience, unity, and progress for future generations. The Alte Feste Restoration Project celebrates Namibia's rich history and demonstrates a commitment to preserving and showcasing our cultural heritage. As Chapman highlighted, “RMB Namibia looks forward to seeing this incredible transformation and its positive impact on our community, creating a legacy for generations to come."
